⏵ character information
name: Dante
canon: Devil May Cry
age: 43
canon point: After the end of Devil May Cry V
history: Here!
abilities:
- super strength and agility: as a half-devil, Dante is supernaturally strong. As a teen with his demonic powers newly awakened, he is able to crack solid stone pillars with one punch and he has only become stronger as he's aged.
- enhanced healing ability: Due to his demonic blood, Dante is able to take a heavy amount of damage and can walk it off as if nothing happened. This includes and is not limited to: being shot in the head at point blank range, being drop kicked in the head, being slashed by bladed weapons, walking away from explosions, sitting on burning demons without injury, being thrown at high speed into large stone statues without as much of a fracture and multiple, multiple impalements (usually involving his own sword). It's become a running joke at this point.
- Devil Trigger and Sin Devil Trigger: Dante is able to tap into his demonic power and physically transforms into a devil. In these forms, Dante's physical and magical abilities gain a significant boost. His healing ability and recovery increases rapidly, he gains the ability to fly thanks to his wings. Sin Devil Trigger is the ultimate acceptance and realisation of his power, achieved by fusing the Rebellion, the Devil Sword Sparda and his own power and manifesting his own weapon, the Devil Sword Dante. In universe it is said there is 'no telling' how much power Dante has in this state, but it is possible he has surpassed his father.
- Weapons Master: Dante is a combat savant and is able to pick up any weapon and master it pretty much instantly. He's a master swordsman and expert marksman, using his demonic abilities to pull the triggers on his specially customized handguns Ebony and Ivory at superhuman speed. His strength enables him to dual wield rocket launchers. He regularly claims Devil Arms as the spoils of his battles and quickly masters their unique abilities, using them not only as weapons but energy to tap into to enhance his innate demonic abilities. He is also able to improvise weaponry and uses anything at his disposal, including pool balls as projectiles and even a motorbike as a melee weapon.
personality:
Dante walks into a room and you are instantly met with a man outwardly possessed of confidence and bravado. Handsome, charismatic, bombastic, ready with a one liner at every opportunity, Dante lives life like it's a party and he's the main event. He seems non-threatening, possibly laughable, but it covers up how truly dangerous he is and causes enemies to underestimate him. Dante's overconfidence is well placed; he's the biggest, baddest threat in the room even in the face of things that are ten times his size and he likes nothing more than to play with and humiliate his prey. He truly comes alive in a fight, getting to flex his muscles and play with his opponents before putting them down. In his own words, hunting demons is 'what he lives for'. In battle is where Dante seems to be the most at ease in his own skin. It's his domain and he has complete control over it.
Behind his happy-go-lucky facade, Dante is haunted by losses from his past. The death of his mother and apparent death of his twin Vergil when he was eight left him traumatised; he buried his identity and lived under the name Tony Redgrave for a number of years as per his mother's last request. He is also heavily weighed down by guilt; his battles with his twin weigh heavily on his conscience and it isn't until the end of Devil May Cry V that he is able to work towards any form of resolution. He has opened bank accounts for the orphaned daughters of his former partner in order to support them and has put himself in persistent debt because of it. For all that he projects an aura of not caring, he cares deeply. In the Visions of V manga, he is seen to become enraged when V mentions Vergil and during the events of the game he uses anger to cover his concern when the recently maimed Nero arrives at the first fight with Urizen.
Although he has few friends, the bonds Dante forms are deep and cherished. He has a long-standing close friendship with Lady, forged from their ordeal with the Temen-ni-Gru and a strong partnership with Trish, a demon who was sent to lure him to Mallet Island. They are always on hand to support him and he has deep respect and trust in them, calling them 'the most badass women in the world.'
